Timber Flooring

Timber flooring falls into 3 categories:

Suspended Timber Floors

A traditional joint and flooring system in which the timber floor joists provide the structural support the flooring material. The underfloor heating is provided by installing aluminium diffusion plates between the joists and above the thermal insulators.

Sprung Wooden Floors

This is a derivative of the traditional joisted floor but in this situation the supporting timber joists/battens do not provide the main structural fabric of the building but are part of a system which provides a performance floor for a specific purpose, e.g sports hall/dance studio

In this type of installation it is recommended that the UFH is installed using aluminium diffusion plates laid between battens, but there are some situations depending on the thermal resistivity of the flooring systems in which the UFH could be laid in the supporting structure, either the slab or screed.

Floating Floors

Floating floors have become increasingly popular with the increased use of concrete floors as the main structural element.

A floating floor usually consists of a concrete floor/substrate being overlaid with an insulating material, a vapour barrier and a particle board floor which is glued together but not fixed to insulation/subfloor.  This allows the floor to move in line with changes in the temperature/humidity within the room.

For floating floors it is necessary to utilise pre-routed floor panels with an inlet aluminium diffusion plate to achieve the required output.
